You can’t celebrate country music without paying tribute to Loretta Lynn or Conway Twitty. The Grand Ole Opry’s 95th-anniversary special honored both of them at once. Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley have both had long careers in the industry, though they aren’t quite legend status yet. The two joined forces for a duet honoring frequent duet partners Loretta Lynn & Conway Twitty.

Brad Paisley Jokingly Says ‘Sorry’ to Loretta Lynn for Duet Performance

Brad Paisley co-hosted the NBC special with his frenemy Blake Shelton. Paisley kept the audience at home in stitches throughout the night with his jokes. And don’t think he spared Carrie Underwood in his barbs.

Ahead of their performance of “Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man,” he joked that they had only rehearsed the song once. Paisley hid his nervousness about tackling the iconic song by looking upward and cracking, “Conway up in Heaven, if you’re watching help me.” He also had a message for Loretta Lynn if she was watching from home: “Sorry.”

So did Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley’s duet version live up to the original?

Fans React to Duet

Country music fans had a mix of reactions to Underwood and Paisley’s duet. The Grand Ole Opry’s official Twitter touted the performance. They wrote that there was “nothing like” Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley teaming up to sing a song together. They even threw in an applause emoji when they were tweeting about the performance.

One country music fan wrote that the duo made Lynn and Twitty “proud” with their take on the classic. The Grand Ole Opry social media team agreed so much that they retweeted the tweet from Twitter user @TherapyDogsRock.

However, not everyone was a fan of Underwood and Paisley singing the song. Another fan, @shellybee721, didn’t think it compared to Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn’s version at all. They wrote, “Sorry, but Conway and Loretta sang it better.”

Music Mayhem Magazine reports that Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood’s appearance on Grand Ole Opry: 95 Years of Country Music was taped back in September. Watch the duet from the earlier show and let us know your thoughts on how they did.
