Born in New Zealand, singer Keith Urban’s dreams to be a country singer seemed almost impossible. With thousands of miles between him and Nashville, the country singer worked tirelessly in the Australian country music industry, hoping to get his foot in the door. Eventually, Urban moved to Nashville, but the instant fame didn’t come overnight. It took another eight years before Urban debuted as a solo artist at the Grand Ole Opry. But never giving up and always moving forward, the country legend eventually received 4 Grammy awards and numerous others for his contribution to country music. Thanks to his songwriting, the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame is honoring the star on October 11.
With a career spanning over two decades, married to Nicole Kidman, and two kids, Keith Urban’s accolades extend more than just the music industry. And having performed on some of the biggest stages, it seems the singer is stunned about receiving what he believed to be the “highest honor” in music.
Discussing the induction, Keith Urban said, “I’ve always loved writing songs. I’ve always loved great songwriters, and, this is a songwriting town. I mean, first the song always. The song is the very first thing. To be in this group, this incredible group of songwriters is a bit surreal. Honestly, it’s probably still sinking in.”
It's a massive honor to be inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame next week and I wanted to shine a light on a collection of songs that I've written.

Keith Urban Honors Fellow Inductees
Alongside Keith Urban, the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame will also induct other artists like Kix Brooks, Casey Beathard, Rafe Van Hoy, David Lee Murphy, and John Jarrard, who passed away back in 2001. Urban praised the group, admitting, “I know all of these guys; Casey Beathard is the only guy that I haven’t really met, but I’ve known David Lee Murphy for a long time, Rafe Van Hoy, Kix Brooks, of course. Kix is like my brother from another mother. He was one of the first people in town to really get behind what I was doing.”
Recalling his former band, The Ranch, Keith Urban detailed how Kix believed in him before many others. “We had nothing on the radio. He was just a great believer of mine. So to be inducted in the same year that Kix is particularly sweet.”
A Singer And A Writer
Although a singer, Keith Urban holds the honor close due to his own writing abilities. “I was writing five days a week at MCA Publishing over there, and on one hand, it was an excruciatingly tough time for me because it wasn’t really how I wrote songs: sitting in a room with a complete stranger, a couple of legal pads, and acoustic guitars in a windowless room. That’s kind of how it was done back then.”
