In an interview ahead of her performance at the Glastonbury Festival this weekend, Shania Twain opened up about the worst moments of raising her siblings.

Shania Twain Raised Her Siblings After Losing Both Parents

Shania Twain was just twenty-two when she was forced to take on the responsibility of raising her younger siblings. Her mother and stepfather were tragically killed in a car accident in 1987. In order to keep her family together, the future country superstar left school to become the full-time caregiver of her younger sister and two brothers. An older sister was already married with children of her own.

Shania Twain spoke to The Sun about the difficulties she faced. She revealed that she often suffered from frostbite due to inadequate clothing. Furthermore, there were taxing physical demands of life in a small town.

“I’d have to go down to the river and bring back coolers of water to drink and do the laundry down there by hand. I chopped my own wood, piled my own wood.”

The “From This Moment On” singer admitted that it was “a lot of pressure” to raise her younger family members and that she didn’t sleep very well for years.

Shania Twain always wanted to be a singer and often entertained crowds at bars from a very young age. Her career skyrocketed in 1995 with the release of her second album, The Woman In Me, which was produced by her future ex-husband, “Mutt” Lange.

“I went from sleeping in cars to traveling first class,” she said about her fast rise to country music superstardom.

True Rags To Riches Story

Even after she became successful, Shania Twain’s struggles weren’t over. She divorced her husband after his infidelity was exposed. She had surgery in 2018 to repair her vocal cords  after damage from Lyme disease.

She’s in the middle of her comeback era with yet another sold out Vegas residency. This weekend, the singer took the stage at the Glastonbury Festival in England.

In a feature with The Sun, the “Come On Over” singer shared insight on her backstage demands. She said that she puts things that make her feel at home on her rider.

“So, you know, vegetables and fruits and protein bars all that is pretty boring and standard, but there’s always like a few like local fares. Like there’s lots of Cadbury chocolate in our dressing room right now, which I’m definitely excited about, and I will say there’s always really good champagne close.”

Now 58, Shania Twain remains close to the siblings she helped raise.
