During the 80s, it was hard to have a conversation about country music without mentioning the iconic duo, The Judds. Comprised of Naomi and Wynonna Judd, the mother and daughter dominated the country music genre with 19 number-one singles.

Besides being the voice behind songs like I Saw The Light and She Is His Only Need, Wynonna eventually landed a spot in the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2022. Sadly, her mother passed away before the ceremony. Recently, Wynonna received the Country Champion award at the 2023 People’s Choice Country Awards. To celebrate the occasion, the singer decided to share some fond memories of her late mother and country music legend.

Wynonna Judd embraced the Country Champion Award, reintroducing herself to the crowd, “Let me tell you something, it’s getting harder and harder out there. Never give up on your dreams. And for half of y’all in this place tonight – I know you don’t know who I am or you were not born when I had my years of being fabulous, and I’ll let that go.”

Wynonna Judd Shares Her Mother’s Advice On Success

Speaking with PEOPLE about her mother, Wynonna detailed how Naomi raised her. “She was a hard, hard, strict single parent, and she said, ‘Give it away. You’re supposed to only keep the cup for yourself, and you give away the overflow.’” She added, “So you keep enough for yourself, but then you give away the overflow. And that’s what I’ve been doing now for 40 years.”

With Naomi having such a massive impact on her daughter and country music, Wynonna decided to release a special album showcasing The Judds called A Tribute To The Judds. Set to release on October 27, the album doesn’t just feature Wynonna but other country music legends like Dolly Parton, Lainey Wilson, Blake Shelton, and Gwen Stefani. Those are just a few of the great artists contributing to the album. Having listened to the album, Wynonna admitted, “It’s beautiful. It’s really weird. I listened to it and I cried and I was overwhelmed.”

The Judds Are Ready To Welcome A New Generation

Knowing the power behind music, Wynonna Judd hopes the new album will honor her late mother and reintroduce The Judds to a new generation. Although the 80s and 90s are over, the singer explained,  “There’s a whole generation of people that don’t know our music, right? The kids that are born now, I’m hoping that someone will listen and go, ‘Huh, I really like that.’ So that’s my hope, is that somebody gets it.”

In September, Wynonna Judd discussed her mother’s passing and how she struggled with anxiety and panic attacks. She recalled the day her mother died.  “I went to her house and she died there, but we followed the ambulance anyway to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. I walked into the room and I held her in my arms, I kissed her on the forehead, shut her eyes and said, ‘I love you, Mom.’”
