When Zach Bryan was a teenager, his father, Dewayne, gifted him a 9/11 commemorative, statue of a firefighter holding a flag with the words “dream big” inscribed on it. The future singer later inscribed the phrase “move mountains,” into a board in his garage. “That’s just always been his spirit,” described his father Dewayne, referring to his son to Tulsa Oklahoma’s news station, KOTV. He then stated, “I think we’re in the middle of something big!”

Zach’s father’s intuitions are correct, as his son continues to build his devoted fanbase with his interesting songs, one of which he duets with Kasey Musgraves. Their duet of “I Remember Everything,” was released as Zach’s lead single from his chart-topping self-titled 2023 album. The two singers took us inside their beachside getaway that served as a symbol of their previous strong love, which has since fizzled away. The beautiful lyrics bring forward such imagery as “Blame it on the beach, grown men don’t cry/ Do you remember that beat down the basement couch?/ I remember, I remember everything/ The sand from your hair is blowin’ in my eyes.”

Kasey Musgraves In The Second Verse

Kasey comes in on the second verse, with details of the chaotic nature of their relationship. She compares the relationship to “concrete feet/ In the summer heat/ It burns like hell when two souls meet.” Just before they join forces in the chorus, Kasey drops the hot line: “No you’ll never be the man you always swore, but, I’ll remember you singin’ in that 88′ Ford.”

Although it’s a mystery as to what or who may have inspired the song, the lyrics definitely feel deep, descriptive, and personal. Kasey posted “Thank you, @zachlanebryan for having me collaborate on this gorgeous song. I definitely pulled some of my own life into it.” She then stated, “Fun fact, y’all: I had full blown strep when I recorded this song but, somehow, I pushed through. So, it’s confirmed: this song is sick as f**k!”

Who Is Zach Bryan?

After many fans pointed out that there is a long by the late, John Prine, with the same title. Zach Bryan made it a point to explain why he had considered renaming  “I Remember Everything.” He wanted to rename his song out of respect for Prine’s song. Zach responded to a fan asking if it was a cover of Prine’s and Zach replied with, “No, and I wish it was.” He followed with, ” I originally changed the name out of respect but, it just didn’t sit right after I wrote the song, hopefully it’s taken as homage. Very different song, and I pray no one takes it as something rude or overshadowing of the man himself.”

However, Zach Bryan did get a seal of approval from Prine’s son who is also a fellow musician, Tommy Prine. Tommy Tweeted a while back, ” I’m stoked to hear it, man!”

Zach And Kasey’s Duet Was An Instant Success

The song “I Remember Everything,” soared to No. 1 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100, which marked it both of their first time being at the top of the chart. Since the song has also reached the pinnacle position on the Hot Country and Hot Rock & Alternative song charts. Not to mention, it was also the first time that a male and female artist sat at the top of the Hot 100 and Hot Country Songs chart concurrently since, 1983, when Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers did the megabit duet, “Islands in the Stream.” Zach’s album did just as well, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, Top Country Albums, Folk Albums charts, and Top Rock Albums.

Unfortunately, you won’t find any interviews or explanations of the song from Zach himself, because, he’s notorious for avoiding interviews and press campaigns. Bryan does, however, share his insight into his process directly with his fans on social media. “I’ve got no grand explanation for these songs. I got no riddle in reasoning behind writing them, I don’t have a bullsh*t roll-out plan to stuff it in-front of as many people as I can,” he posted to his Instagram, the day before the album was released.

Zach’s duet with Kasey, “I Remember Everything,” was nominated for Best Country Song and Best Country Duo/Group Performance at next years, 2024 Grammy Awards.
