Toby Keith and his wife, Tricia Lucus, dated for three short years before tying the knot in 1984. And, their love story is on for the books.
Toby Keith and Tricia Lucus’ Love Story
The famous, “I Love This Bar,” singer Toby Keith is currently battling stomach cancer. He and Tricia met shortly after Toby graduated from high school while he was working in the oil field and playing shows at bars at night. They dated for three years and decided to tie the knot in 1984.
Toby told Country Weekly, “Dozens of people told Tricia, ‘You need to go tell your old man to get a real job. It took a strong-hearted and loving woman to say, ‘ He’s good enough at music that I’ve got to let him try. And it’ll be a great shot for both of us if he can make it work.'”
Toby added, “I absolutely love performing and writing songs, but being at home with my wife, Tricia, and my three kids is the best feeling of all.”
Where They Met
The couple had met at a bar. After graduating from high school in 1979, Toby Keith took his first job as an oil field worker, making $50,000 per year. He followed the footsteps of his father, doing “typical roughneck stuff.”
He played and sang at local bars with his band called the Easy Money Band, and they performed Alabama-styyle country-rock. During that time, he met Tricia, who was working as an oil company secretary.
Tricia told PEOPLE in 2001, “I was 19 and he was 20. He was just one of those larger-than-life guys, full of confidence.”

When They Got Married
The couple decided to get married in 1984, after just three years of dating.
Toby recently shared the couple’s 39th wedding anniversary on Instagram with a photo, to commemorate the day.
Do They Have Children?
While Toby didn’t have any children prior to marrying Tricia, she had one daughter in 1980, Shelley Cover Roawlnd. After they married Keith adopted her daughter and the couple went on to have two more children together, a daughter in 1985, Krystal and a son in 1997, Stelen.
Krystal is a recording artist and musician, like her dad. She is also married to her husband, Drew. They share two children together – Kirby and Hensley.
Stelen is an entrepreneur and is involved in numerous businesses including, Sellout Crowd, Hollywood Corners, 405 Burger Bar, and Tequila Chulos. Stelen is married to his wife, Haley and they share a Siberian Husky named Dodger.
Toby’s family supported him as he received the BMI Icon Award in November on 2022. Stelen then shared behind-the-scenes footage on his Instagram of the family celebrating together.
Tricia supported Keith’s music career early-on when the oil fields started taking a dive.
