The statue of Willie Nelson was vandalized in Austin, Texas. The statue has been there since 2012. This is the first time the statue honoring “The Red-Headed Stranger” has been vandalized.

Willie Nelson And His Ties To Austin

Willie Nelson is tightly tied to Austin, Texas. Austin is where he moved after he didn’t find the success he was looking for in the country music capital of the world, Nashville, Tennessee. That was way back in 1972.

In Austin, the “Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain” singer was able to merge two distinct groups into one with his unique sound. The country music megastar brought together the hippies and the cowboys with what would later become known as “outlaw music.” And, as they say, “the rest is history.”

Austin Isn’t Taking This Lightly

The capital of Texas, Austin, is not taking this crime lightly. They intend on punishing the vandals of the Willie Nelson statue to the full extent of the law. In Texas, such a crime is known as “criminal mischief.”

Depending on the severity of the crime, the punishment can vary greatly. According to the law this crime is quite serious. “Classified as a first-degree felony if the value of damage done is more than $200,000. This offense carries a potential sentence of five to 99 years in prison and fines reaching $10,000,” according to the Texas laws.

Who Would Vandalize The Willie Nelson Statue?

According to the local police in Austin, they have yet to discover a motive for the vandalism. At the time of publication, there had been no arrests made for this crime. Sadly, the local police do not even have any suspects.

Also, at the time of publication, the “On The Road Again” singer had yet to make a statement regarding the vandalism of the statue that honors him. It is unknown if he is even aware of the situation.

The Willie Nelson Statue Was Cleaned Up

Thankfully, the Willie Nelson statue is being taken care of. Local crews have been working feverishly to clean up the statue. They used power washers to remove the paint from the eight-foot bronze statue of the “Always On My Mind” singer.

It has been reported the statue is now looking as good as it did when it was new. Just because it back to its former glory does not mean that all things will be forgiven. It did happen in Texas. Texas takes country music and Willie Nelson seriously. There is no doubt whoever did this, when caught, will suffer the consequences of their actions.

Tell us what you think. Have you seen the statue of Willie Nelson in Austin? Should such a crime be considered a felony? Will the vandals be punished more because their crime was disrespectful towards Willie Nelson and country music as a whole? Sound off in the comment section below.
