Wynonna Judd Covers Loretta Lynn Classic With Emmy Russell
Season 22 of American Idol premiered on ABC in February. One of the contestants had a face and voice that viewers recognized immediately. Emmy Russell is the granddaughter of country music icon Loretta Lynn. Not only is the physical resemblance clear as day, Loretta Lynn’s unique voice has been passed down through the generations to her granddaughter.

ABC brought out the big guns to end the season and also celebrate judge Katy Perry’s last episode. She previously revealed that Season 22 would be her last. The network hasn’t announced who will replace her. Wynonna Judd was among the big stars in the music industry to take the stage. She joined Emmy Russell in a stunning cover of Loretta Lynn’s “Coal Miner’s Daughter.”
While fans couldn’t stop gushing about Wynonna’s voice, her demeanor and behavior also drew comments. What’s going on?
Legendary Singer Sparks Concern After American Idol Performance
Wynonna Judd’s voice was perfect as always. But she still caused fans to worry. Her usual bubbly and energetic personality on stage was missing. Instead, the legendary singer belted out the song while standing perfectly still and barely moving any of her body, including her head.
Fans took to the comments on the American Idol Instagram post about the duet to express their concern:
- Was Wynona okay? She looked stone faced and then she grabbed Emma’s hand like she was gonna pass out or something. Emmy kept watching her like she was worried about her. Is she sick or something?
- Even though she’s denied it, something is definitely up with Wynonna. She plants her shoeless feet on stage and does not move, for fear of losing balance.
- Something seems off with Winona. She just stands really stiff. Did I see bare feet? What’s going on?
- Wynona looks to have terrible anxiety maybe?
- WTF is wrong with Wynonna?
Wynonna Judd has yet to address her behavior, but one fan had a theory. They wrote, “She has publicly stated she suffers from vertigo. She was having a really bad episode when I saw her on The Judd’s tour, but she powered through like the consummate professional she is.”
Not The First Time
The May 19th performance on American Idol wasn’t the first time Wynonna Judd seemingly froze on stage. She performed with Jelly Roll at the 2023 CMA Awards. She seemed to have the same issue, even clinging to Jelly Roll’s shirt at several points in the performance.
After the public outcry of concern, Wynonna Judd addressed the CMA performance, citing nerves as a reason for her strange behavior.
