American Idol host Luke Bryan spoke recently about how different success is for new and upcoming artists, despite not winning on shows like American Idol or The Voice. Read along to find out more.

Winner Takes It All?

American Idol has launched many careers for the winners and runners-up. Country Star Carrie Underwood got her start and more from the show, and so did Fantasia Barrino, and Scotty McCreery. Sometimes it’s the runners-up that are even more famous, and you may not even remember the actual winner! Ruben Studdard was great, but who does everyone talk about from that season? That’s right, Clay Aiken.

Famous and successful in the last few years looks a little different though. Many stars in music didn’t even make it onto the show, like Lainey Wilson, and she still found fame.

As Luke Bryan pointed out to Lon Helton on the Country Countdown USA podcast, “There are so many levels why kids are more advanced today. You can learn everything about music at the tips of your fingers. When Idol launched, there was a sentiment that the kids weren’t paying their dues. Now it is another discovery device. Kids come on to gain followers and sell who they are as an artist. You don’t have to win to have success.”

These new kids aren’t coming in with zero knowledge and skills, ready to work their way up. Instead, they are already on social media and online sites like YouTube and TikTok, performing and gaining a following. Shows like AI are just another way to more screen time and get new fans.

Internet Famous

Country Singer Gabby Barrett caught the attention of American Idol with her YouTube channel first and then caught the attention of the judges and fans. Many stars don’t even have platforms like American Idol anymore. Bailey Zimmerman shot to fame on TikTok, and stars like Toddrick Hall and Kurt Hugo Schneider gained followers on YouTube. It’ll be interesting to see if these shows will still go on since these artists are becoming famous without them. Will Luke Bryan be out of a job?? Probably not, the man can still sing, even if he forgets the words sometimes. Okay, maybe it was just one time. We won’t hold him to that.

What do you think? Will we see less interest in these shows? Is social media famous going to keep being a “thing”? And do we forgive Luke B? (Of course we do!!) Let me know if the comments!
