The country music world was rocked when superstar duo Florida Georgia Line announced their breakup in 2022. Fans were left stunned and heartbroken, wondering what could have caused the seemingly inseparable pair to go their separate ways. Now, Brian Kelley, one-half of the iconic group, is opening up about the factors that led to the end of an era.

A Desire for Solo Pursuits

Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard met during their senior year at Belmont University in Nashville. They quickly became close friends and started writing songs together. They formed the country music duo Florida Georgia Line and had their first big break in 2012 with the single “Cruise.” After ten years of chart-topping hits, tours, and ventures that included a Nashville bar, they shocked fans by announcing the end of FGL in 2022.

Fans have been trying to figure out what went wrong ever since. The two musicians have differing stories about what went down between them. Tyler Hubbard recently shared his side that placed the decision squarely at Brian Kelley’s cowboy boots.

Brian Kelley has kept mostly quiet about the reason behind the split. But he broke his silence earlier this week on Bachelor Nation star Nick Viall’s podcast. The country artist said that he’s kept his silence out of respect for fans and family, but felt he had to clarify a few things about the end of Florida Georgia Line.

He agreed that it was his idea to focus on his solo career, even though he “loved” being part of the duo. “It was important to me to continue trailblazing, and also to me, to honor my voice and my songwriting,” he shared.

However, he denied that ending FGL was ever his intention.

Brian Kelley Says He Never Wanted FGL To End

While the desire for solo projects was the catalyst, Brian Kelley claimed on The Viall Files that he wanted to have his solo career and continue with Florida Georgia Line. “I wanted to keep it going. No, he wasn’t interested,” he said, referring to his former bandmate, Tyler Hubbard.

He continued, “The goal for me at the top of those conversations was really to keep going. To have an extra outlet for both but continue with FGL. So, it wasn’t really a me leaving scenario, just to clear that up.”

The Future is Bright

The end of Florida Georgia Line marks the close of an incredible chapter in country music history. However, for Kelley and Hubbard, it was a necessary step to allow for personal and artistic growth.

The story of Florida Georgia Line may have ended, but the music lives on. As Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard forge new paths, fans get to be part of an exciting new chapter.
