After two decades of making music together, country supergroup Rascal Flatts announced their decision to disband in 2021. The news came as a shock to fans around the world, who had grown up with the trio’s signature harmonies and hits like “Life is a Highway” and “Bless the Broken Road.”
Gary LeVox, Jay DeMarcus, and Joe Don Rooney formed Rascal Flatts in 1999, quickly rising through the ranks of Nashville’s competitive country scene. Their blend of pop-infused hooks earned them 17 number one singles. The group’s farewell tour was originally planned for 2020 but delayed due to the pandemic. The tour never happened because they split up instead.
A month after sparking reunion rumors, the band just announced they are reuniting after five years to embark on a 25th anniversary tour. The Life Is a Highway Tour kicks off in February 2025 and wraps up in April. Click here to see if they are coming to a city near you.
Joe Don Rooney’s 2021 DUI Arrest
In September 2021, Rascal Flatts lead guitarist and background vocalist, Joe Don Rooney was arrested for DUI after crashing his car into a tree in Tennessee. He pleaded guilty to the charges in June 2022 and was sentenced to two days in jail.
Rascal Flatts’ Singer Reveals How He’ll Stay Sober On Tour
Now four years sober, Joe Don Rooney and his bandmates spoke to Taste Of Country Nights about the upcoming tour. The guitarist was asked how he plans to stay sober.
“It’ll be the H2O Tour for me,” he said. The Rascal Flatts guitarist added, “Life in general is different. I’ve got my connection with God and I’m so grateful for that.”
He was asked if he reached out to other country artists who struggled with addiction. Joe Don Rooney said yes, but declined to give any names. Instead, he said, “It’s a great community of recovery people in Nashville.”
But his bandmate, Gary LeVox, name checked Lady A singer Charles Kelley as someone who has a “great” sobriety story.
Taste of Country Nights host Evan Paul asked Joe Don Rooney how else he prepared for returning to the road.
“You take five years off. That’s what you do. I’m excited about it. I’m out of practice. I haven’t been playing much music at all. I needed to get away from all of it.”
