Dolly Parton keeps her marriage to Carl Dean close to her vest. What has she said about her husband of 57 years?
Country Music Icon Honored By Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame
Dolly Parton made her career in country music, so it was a huge surprise to her when the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame extended an invitation to join their esteemed list of inductees. At first, Parton didn’t think she belonged with the likes of The Rolling Stones, Nirvana, Jerry Lee Lewis, or the other 300+ members.
However, her fans disagreed, and Dolly Parton eventually gave in. She’s among the musicians inducted in 2022. Southern Living reported that she dedicated her forthcoming rock album to her husband during her red-carpet appearance at the event.
“He loves rock ‘n’ roll, he loves Led Zeppelin and he loves ‘Stairway to Heaven.’ So I’m going to do a lot of things like that for him,” she said.
Dolly Parton’s full Rockstar album releases on Nov. 17, but several singles are out already, including “World On Fire.” The next single is her version of a 4 Non Blondes hit. “What’s Up? feat. Linda Perry)” comes out on Friday, Sept. 22.

Why Dolly Parton Keeps Her Marriage Private
Dolly Parton has been married for over five decades, but fans rarely get a glimpse of her husband. In fact, she told Entertainment Tonight in 2020 that some doubt his very existence.
However, Carl Dean is a real person, and Dolly Parton married him in May 1966, despite cautions not to. They had a private vow renewal on their 50th anniversary in 2016. The Daily Mail reports that the couple did take photos of the vow renewal but sold them to raise money for Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library literacy charity.
While fans likely won’t get a glimpse of the photos, Carl Dean gave his first and only interview to help promote the charity. He answered questions submitted by fans. One question was his first impression of the singer.
He said, “My first thought was I’m gonna marry that girl. My second thought was, Lord she’s good lookin’.”
As for why she kept her marriage private, Dolly Parton shared in 2022 that her mother influenced the decision. TODAY reports that Parton said, “…My mama told me when I was young, ‘Always keep something back for you. You can give what you’ve got to give, but don’t give it all away.'”
