From an artist who sang openly about drinking to a woman who has been sober for over a year, Ashley McBryde shares her story.

A Short History Of Ashley McBryde

40-year-old Ashley McBryde is a country singer and songwriter from Arkansas. She has since moved near Nashville, TN to grow her music career. McBryde’s career began in 2016 with her extended play “Jalopies & Expensive Guitars.” Though she had made and published music before this point and had played in various small bands, this is the work that jumpstarted her career. Though she has not had record-breaking success, she is well-off in the music industry and has developed a large fanbase. Ashley is now known for her songs “Girl Going Nowhere,” “One Night Standards,” “Bible and A. 44,” as well as others.

Ashley McBryde’s Talks About Devil I Know

Two days ago on September 23rd, Ashley shared a tweet about being on a radio show with Kelleigh Bannen. The two talk about her song “The Devil I Know,” which was released earlier this year. We get a little insight on how she views herself and her recent struggles.

Near the start of the conversation, Kelleigh Bannen starts strong with a meaningful quote she got from someone in her life. She says, “The Anecdote to shame is not icing out that thing, whether it’s that version of yourself you’re embarrassed about from 23 or whatever, you don’t ice it out and make it sit in the corner, that doesn’t heal anything.”

Ashley McBryde responds, “No, and it makes it tap you on the shoulder until you pay attention to it again. But if you just look at all the complex, sometimes pretty screwed up things you know how to be, and ways to function and go, yup. This is all me, and it’s okay. There’s even a line in ‘Blackout Betty’ that says ‘Why can’t I have just one glass of wine? Hey, I’m a real piece of sh*t sometimes. And at the time, I was, pretty often… At the time it was absolute truth, I mean, I wrote this song hungover.”

Ashley Opens Up About Her Drinking

Later, Bannen brings up a heavy question; “Do you want to talk about where you are with drinking?”

Here is what Ashley had to say: “I didn’t check the counter and I haven’t, but it’s 450-something days, I think the last time I sat with you it was like 100. What a white-knuckle time to sit down and talk.  But I didn’t really want to talk to anyone about it even lightly until a year had passed because I was like what if I screw it up? But it’s so wonderful… I know how to hurt, I do now… and now when I’m uncomfortable, I say out loud, ‘I know how to be uncomfortable…’ you don’t know how much I could drink, I could drink you under a table’ What an awful thing to admit!”

It is inspiring to see how far McBryde has come, and hopefully, she will share more about the path to recovery with addiction.
