Country music superstar recently announced she has decided to reconcile with her husband, Jay Barker. The “Suds In The Bucket” singer understands this is not the popular or expected thing to do after the many issues the couple has faced. Because of this, Sara Evans is expecting people to be angry with her for making this choice.
The Hidden Domestic Abuse
For many years throughout her marriage to Jay Barker, Sara Evans had been hiding the domestic abuse she was dealing with. At the time, the country music superstar thought she was protecting her children. She believed she was protecting them.
Not only did she hide the domestic abuse from her children, Sara Evans also tried to hide it from the rest of the world. Few, if any, knew what her home life was like. It was because of the domestic abuse the “No Place That Far” singer separated from her from husband.
“A lack of attention from men was all I’d ever known. If Jay was jealous, that meant he was obsessed with me, which meant he loved me,” Sara Evans explained. “I was so madly in love with him, and still am, that it took me forever to tell people. I was in denial. I thought, ‘I can change it…manage his behavior…just make sure that nothing ever upsets him.’”
Felony Aggravated Assault With A Deadly Weapon
It was only when Jay Barker was arrested and charged with felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon that the truth about Sara Evans and her marriage came to light. Jay Barker ran his truck into a car Evans and her daughter were passengers in. Thankfully, they were not hurt.
Instead of being convicted of felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, Jay Barker entered a “best interest” plea. He was convicted of the misdemeanor reckless endangerment. Previous reports have stated he served one year of probation for this crime.
The Reconciliation Of Sara Evans And Jay Barker
Sara Evans made the decision to reconcile with her husband. Because of her choice, the “Love, Don’t Be A Stranger” singer is expecting a backlash of anger towards her.
“My biggest fear is that people are going to judge me or be angry with me for staying with Jay and not understand the whole story and the whole picture,” Sara Evans stated. “I just want, more than anything, for them to understand that each marriage is different, each story is different.”
The decision to get back together did not come easy for Sara Evans. She struggled with it. The country music megastar also set some ground rules both she and Jay Barker had to follow. Participating couples counseling as well as individual therapy were a part of those ground rules.
Sara Evans Asks For Understanding
Sara Evans is hoping people will understand her decision. She does not want anyone to angry about the choices she made regarding her specific marriage and her specific circumstances.
“This is my marriage. It’s my situation. I’m married to a wonderful man who did imperfect things. I’m a great person who is also imperfect. That was our choice to get better and heal. No one should make their decisions based on me,” Sara Evans said. “This is very scary because, again, people are going to be mad. [But] I hope that most people will give me the benefit of the doubt and give Jay the benefit of the doubt and just take me at my word that this is the right decision for me.”
