Taylor Swift’s original fans are becoming more and more disappointed with her recent albums. In the year 2004, Taylor began her music career. She was only fifteen when the artist signed a label with Big Machine Records, a group that mainly specializes in the country genre. Taylor made arguably the best music in her discography during that thirteen-year contract, So what happened? Why did Swift stray away from the country genre when it was working so well for her? Country music was the reason she made it big, so why leave it?

Taylor’s Road to Becoming a Popstar

The first step into pop music came in 2012 with Taylor Swift’s album, Red. Then shortly after, in the year 2014, Taylor dropped 1989. This was considered her first record which was wholly pop music. However, up until that point, she had won thirty-three major awards before the year 2014 for her music. Her career was soaring and well-loved in the country community, yet she decided to branch out anyway.

Abrupt Change in Style

Next, with this sudden change of music style also came a wardrobe change. Not only that, but she left her home in Pennsylvania to live it up in New York, which is about as far from country living as you can get. Maybe it was the change in environment or the upcoming drama with her record label, but Taylor was soon going to walk away from country music for good.

Record Label Drama

Then Taylor Swift’s contract with Big Machine ended in 2018, and things started to get hairy. Her label company was bought out and she soon lost ownership of the first six of her albums. She was not even allowed the rights to perform her original songs at the 2019 American Music Awards, or use her previous music in the 2020 documentary “Miss Americana.” It was not until November 2020 that she was finally able to re-record said albums. Did this situation stump the growth of her success in the country genre? You cannot blame her if this situation left a bad taste in her mouth with her experience signing for a country label. Right now, Taylor is currently signed with Republic Records and Universal Music Group.

The most recent album to come out is Midnights, which came out on October 21st, 2022. Unsurprisingly, this is yet another pop album. Right now, Taylor Swift is on a worldwide tour labeled Eras, which is proving to be a big hit. According to Rob Sheffield of Rolling Stone India, “This is her best tour ever, by an absurd margin.” The reviews and experience are impressively unparalleled. Lucky for country fans, she also just re-released her album, Speak Now, which was announced on May 5th, 2023 at a concert in Nashville, TN. According to Gary Trust of Billboard, “Taylor Swift soars past 100 career hits on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, thanks to 22 new entries – the entirety of her new album, Speak Now (Taylor’s Version).”

A Hopeful Future

Although she has not created any new country tracks, her past work continues to grow and bring success. With hope, this will inspire her to go back to her roots, even if it is just for one album.
