Although a shock to some, country singer Lainey Wilson, who won New Female Artist of the Year, once performed at festivals and even children’s hospitals as Hannah Montana. Breaking into the music industry wasn’t easy for Wilson, who lived in a small town with her parents, a farmer and a schoolteacher.
But through hard work and determination, she now sits at the top of country music as the fastest female to climb to number one, thanks to “Watermelon Moonshine.” While a massive hit, the singer recently detailed how the song caused several ex-boyfriends to take claim for its inspiration. Well, Wilson decided to set the record straight and break more hearts.
Recently, “Watermelon Moonshine” hit number one on the Billboards Country Airplay. The song, which centers around love, moonshine, and being young, was written by Lainey Wilson, with the help of Jordan Schmidt and Josh Kear. A
ttached to the Bell Bottom Country album, the singer admitted, “Every boy I have ever dated in my lifetime thinks this song is about them.” While some ex-boyfriends clearly haven’t moved on, Wilson is taken thanks to former NFL quarterback Devlin Hodges. Although the relationship is somewhat new to fans, the singer explained how the pair secretly dated for two years before sharing it with the world.

If It ‘Butters Your Biscuit’
Lainey Wilson remains vague on the inspiration behind “Watermelon Moonshine” but joked that guys she only met a few times are taking credit for the hit. When asked, she said, “I’m like, ‘Boy, if that butters your biscuit, if that makes you feel good, you’re right. I wrote it about ya.'”
It’s easy to see where some of her past loves might get the idea since the lyrics point to a particular time in Lainey Wilson’s life. She sings in one verse, “It was right after senior year/Just before the summer disappeared/We went a-ridin’ them old farm ruts/Hangin’ out on the gate of his truck/We threw a blanket ‘neath the sunset/Bein’ brave as 18 gets/We gave each other more than our hearts/With the help of a mason jar.”

Lainey Wilson Inspired By Lost Love
With such powerful lyrics, it makes perfect sense that fans and even ex-boyfriends want to know who helped inspire such a popular song. Shining some light on “Watermelon Moonshine,” Lainey Wilson told American Songwriter over the Summer, “It’s truly about that young, wild crazy love. That time in your life when nothing else matters.” Instead of tying it to a single person, the singer explained how it is for anyone with a lost love. “You can’t help but listen to Watermelon Moonshine and think about that one person you were madly in love with.”
