Two months ago, Maren Morris claimed she was done with country music. However, the writer of “Last Turn Home” is already biting her tongue. In a new statement, Morris denies saying she was leaving country music.

Maren Morris Leaves Country

A few months ago, starting in September 2023, Maren Morris claimed she was taking a step back from country music. Originally, she opened up about her frustrations with the Los Angeles Times. Specifically, she wanted to separate herself from the industry and community. Maren tells the New York Times the following on an episode of “Popcast:”

“I don’t want to say goodbye, but I really cannot participate in the really toxic arms of this institution anymore… I couldn’t do this, like, sort of circus anymore of feeling like I have to absorb and explain people’s bad behaviors and laugh it off. I just couldn’t do that after 2020, particularly… I certainly can’t participate in a lot of it. So I’m okay kind of just going and doing my own thing… I thought I’d like to burn it to the ground and start over, but it’s burning itself down without my help.”

Morris also goes into detail about her issues with controversial songs such as “Try That In A Small Town.” She is frustrated that country music is used as an excuse to be hateful. Saying, “It just revealed who people really were and that they were proud to be misogynistic and racist and homophobic and transphobic. All these things were being celebrated, and it was weirdly dovetailing with this hyper-masculine branch of country music.”

To many people, it was clear as day that Maren Morris was no longer going to be making or indulging in country music. However, she says this is not true in a new interview.

Maren Morris Denies Leaving Country Music

On November 7th, 2023, Morris starred on an episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon where she finally cleared the air. As it turns out, all of this was just clickbait! Here is what she tells Jimmy:

“I will sort of just clarify: I have not left country music; that was just the headline. I like what I said was that I was just leaving behind the kind of toxic parts of it – and that’s in any part of the music industry. But just like the things that I am in control of. Yeah – I want to take the good parts with me. I’ve always written everything like very genre-bendy for years. I don’t think people label it as much anymore. I’m from Texas, I grew up on all of that music, so the way I write, the way I sing, that’s just how it comes out -whatever genre I’m doing or whatever feature I’m doing. So yeah, that was just a headline, clickbait that got blown up. I just make music.”

Are you relieved about this news, or frustrated that it was mainly meant to be a headline?
