Maren Morris Calls Country Music In Nashville ‘Toxic’

Although singer Maren Morris grew up in Texas, she relocated to Nashville, Tennessee after falling in love with country music. Releasing several albums, the singer garnered eight top tens on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart with another three number-one hits. While embraced by country music and its rich culture, it seems Morris might be quitting after she criticized the genre, calling it a “circus.”

On Wednesday, Maren Morris participated in The New York Times’ Popcast podcast, expressing her thoughts on the current state of country music and why she is leaving. Before the singer explained the reasoning for her comments, she reassured fans that she loved Nashville, her family there, and the life she built.

She also added that while quitting country music might be a stretch, she wouldn’t “participate in a lot of it. I couldn’t do this circus anymore — feeling like l have to absorb and explain people’s bad behaviors and laugh it off. I just couldn’t do that after 2020 particularly. I’ve changed. A lot of things changed about me that year.”

Marren Morris Received Death Threats

The bold statement from Maren Morris comes after years of backlash. Back in 2021, she criticized Morgan Wallen after a video showed him using a racial slur. The singer wrote on X, “It actually IS representative of our town because this isn’t his first ‘scuffle,’ and he just demolished a huge streaming record last month regardless.”

Positioning herself at the center of the controversy, Maren Morris discussed how she received death threats for supporting the LGBTQ+ community. “I underestimated the power of the town and also every broken thing about it — how it protects itself no matter what the cost. That sucked — not because I regret what I said.”

Calling Brittany Aldean ‘Insurrection Barbie’

Not all that surprising, this isn’t Maren Morris’s first tussle with country music. In August 2022, she took aim at the wife of Jason Aldean, Brittany, for making what she believed to be insensitive remarks about transgender children. At the time, Brittany posted on Instagram, “I’d really like to thank my parents for not changing my gender when I went through my tomboy phase. I love this girly life.”

Not too thrilled about her statement on being a proud woman, Maren Morris fired back at Aldean, calling her a “scumbag human” and “insurrection Barbie.”

She later shared a video detailing her thoughts. “We’ve dealt with idiots, you know, for years saying insanely stupid stuff to us. … I’m just so sick of looking at absolute horses–t on the internet and people getting away with it, much less being celebrated for it.”

With Maren Morris winning five Academy of Country Music Awards and a Grammy Award, do you believe she will leave the genre for good? Be sure to let us know below.
