While any sort of celebrity learns how to deal with negative comments and backlash from the press or fans, singer Maren Morris found herself shocked when her stance on one issue led to death threats. But it wasn’t the death threats that startled the singer, who has tussled with backlash before, it was how it was directed toward her son, Hayes.
Back in 2021, Morgan Wallen celebrated a night out in Nashville with his friends when a video showed him using racial slurs. Addressing the incident, the singer explained, “I was around some of my friends and we say dumb stuff together. In our minds, it’s playful. It sounds ignorant but that’s where it came from.” Wallen added, “I think I was just ignorant about it. I don’t think I sat down and was like, ‘Hey, is this right or is this wrong?’”
Morgan Wallen Grows In Popularity
Morgan Wallen even released a statement condemning his words. “There are no excuses to use this type of language, ever. I want to sincerely apologize for using the word. I promise to do better.”
As the video circulated around social media, Maren Morris chimed in. “It actually IS representative of our town because this isn’t his first ‘scuffle’ and he just demolished a huge streaming record last month regardless. We all know it wasn’t his first time using that word.”
The Grammy Award winner pointed out that people like Wallen are “protected at all costs with no recourse.” Although suspended by his label and temporarily removed from country radio, Wallen continued to gain support, accepting a headlining gig at the Stagecoach music festival in 2024.

Reliving the backlash her son received, Maren Morris didn’t regret taking a stance on the matter but was somewhat naive to the hate festering in the country music community. “I underestimated, like I have a lot, the power of the town and also every broken thing about it, and how it protects itself no matter what. It’s very historically accurate for that reaction to happen that way.”
Maren Morris Criticizes Brittany Aldean
Maren Morris didn’t stop with Wallen, she also criticized Jason Aldean’s wife, Brittany, when she jokingly commented on trans youth and her tomboy stage in 2022. Referring to Aldean as a “scumbag human”, the singer declared, “I’m not afraid to hold people accountable but I also — especially in the last year — don’t feel like that’s my crown to wear every f—king time.”
Wanting to focus on her career more than politics, Maren Morris is looking to the future and leaving the negativity behind her. “I’m so ready to go elsewhere and look at the light and bring the people who want to come along with me.”

When things between society members are tense, people need to take a break and step away
from the situation to allow things to cool off a bit. Maren Morris doesn’t see it that way. She wants
the fame and attention she receives when she verbally attacks other people, but doesn’t want to be
attacked herself in return. No one should ever threaten a person’s children for any reason. Whoever
did that is wrong for it. Period. She has my sympathy on that one point.
