Although his newest album Highway Desperado doesn’t hit shelves until November 3, Jason Aldean is already making waves with his single Try That in A Small Town. While proud of the song, it has drawn a firestorm of criticism from some who claimed it to be supporting “lynching”. The singer defended the song claiming “I’m not saying anything that’s not true”. Even fellow singer Maren Morris criticized the lyrics. Still, it seems that fans of Aldean and country music voiced their opinion when helping the song hit number one song the week. Truly thankful, Aldean decided to share a message with fans.

With so much controversy around Try That in a Small Town, Jason Aldean recently talked about its initial release and how he knew the music video would cause a debate. “The biggest issue I think people had when we released the song was that it mentioned ‘having a gun that my grandfather gave me.’ I mentioned a gun, that’s a no-no right now, and I just remember thinking, ‘Man, you guys haven’t even seen the video yet.'”

Seeing Into The Future

In July, the music video hit online, showing moments of protesting around the country and people burning American flags. The backlash was so great that CMT pulled it from their lineup. Somewhat surprised by the criticism, Jason Aldean explained, “If you’ve got common sense, you can look at the video and see, I’m not saying anything that’s not true. In the video, I’m showing you what happened — I didn’t do it, I didn’t create it — it just happened, and I saw it, and I’m not cool with it.”

Singer Maren Morris added her voice to the conversation when she admitted to distancing herself from the industry due to the “hyper-masculine branch of country music.” She suggested people streaming the song were doing it out of spite. “It’s not out of true joy or love of the music. It’s to own the libs. And that’s so not what music is intended for.’ She added, “It’s being used as this really toxic weapon in culture wars.”

Jason Aldean Thankful To Fans

No matter the view, fans loved Try That in a Small Town as it dominated the charts. Jason Aldean showed his appreciation by sharing a video, thanking fans for all their love and support over the last few months. The singer also reminded fans that the song is part of his Highway Desperado album hitting shelves in November.
