Known for hit songs like “Beer for My Horses,” Toby Keith’s career in country music included selling over 40 million albums while releasing a commendable 19 studio albums. That doesn’t include his two Christmas albums.

Considered a pillar in country music, many stars and fans rallied around the artist when he revealed he had been battling stomach cancer since 2021. While the singer took time to focus on his treatment and recovery, he proved to fans that he still has the power and pipes to sing on the big stage. Surprising fans who attended Jason Aldean’s Oklahoma concert on October 13, the country icon shocked the headliner as well.

Toby Keith Heads To Country Radio

Before Toby Keith casually strolled on stage with Jason Aldean, he stunned viewers at the People’s Choice Country Awards when he performed “Don’t Let The Old Man In.”

Besides silencing the crowd, Blake Shelton also awarded the Country Icon Award to the singer. While holding the award, Keith admitted, “A lot of people go in and make it a big career like this of 30 years, my manager, TK Kimbrell, Brian O’Connell, Elaine Schock, the band and the crew and everybody that’s all behind this thing, all the great musicians that have played on all of these albums in the studios, they’ve poured their heart and soul into what I do. And most of all, I want to thank the fans for still allowing us to do what we do.”

Being honored wasn’t the only good thing that happened to Toby Keith that night either when Jimmy Harnen, President of BMLG Records, announced bringing “Don’t Let The Old Man In” back to country radio.

“After seeing Toby’s incredible performance of ‘Don’t Let The Old Man In’ on the People’s Choice Country Awards, we were so moved, we wanted to be a part of this song any way we possible—we’re looking forward to taking it to Country radio,” Harnen said.

Jason Aldean Surprised As Much As The Crowd

While undergoing a sort of resurgence over the last few months, Jason Aldean recently discussed his concert in Oklahoma and how he hoped Toby Keith might perform alongside him. Although Keith is a fan of Aldean, the singer had prior commitments, noting he wanted to attend his grandson’s football game.

“He’s like, “‘I should be back around 10:30’. I’m like, ‘the show ends at 11, man,'” Aldean recounted.

Following the “show must go on” mentality, Jason Aldean performed his lineup, and with a few more songs left, he received word that Toby Keith arrived.

Hoping to give the icon a proper greeting, the singer never got the chance as Keith was already walking on stage. “I’m in the middle of that and I look over in the pit and people are already going crazy … he’s already walking on stage, just sashaying on stage like he does. Place went crazy.”

With Jason Aldean’s 2023 Highway Desperado Tour on the verge of finishing, the singer explained Toby Keith was “a tough guy,” adding that seeing him perform at such a level – “it says a lot about him.”
