Chris Stapleton Talks Losing A Drinking Contest With Himself

Country Music, Country Music News, News

Although many know Chris Stapleton for his powerful Super Bowl performance of the National Anthem, which brought America to tears, his time in country music goes all the way back to the early 2000s. Not a singer at the time, Stapleton paved his way into country music by writing songs for artists like Kenny Chesney and George Strait. Eventually, the singer found his voice and the rest fell into place. While his voice carried hints of bluegrass and Southern soul, most of his songs surrounded whiskey. And while the singer once enjoyed a nice drink or two, he recently admitted to taking a step back from his partying days.

Besides having a new album, Higher, coming out and a slew of new concerts, Chris Stapleton’s life at home is just as busy. Married to Morgane Stapleton, who is also a singer-songwriter, the couple share five children. And that doesn’t include their dog, Maggie. Maggie is an important member of the family since Stapleton wrote a song about the dog on his Starting Over album in 2020.

“Greatest Electrician Who Ever Lived”

First meeting while working on Music Row, Chris Stapleton fell in love with the songwriter, and other than starting a family together, the duo work hand in hand on his music. On his Higher album, there are a total of 14 songs. Morgane sings background on ten of them and is labeled as a producer. Stapleton admitted she also carries a great weight in the decision-making when it comes to songs. “She’s my barometer on songs. Even if your wife wasn’t heavily involved in your career, if you’re happily married and you want to stay that way, you don’t want to sing things that your wife hates.”

But before Chris Stapleton found love, family, and purpose, he was a 23-year-old songwriter hoping to break into the business in Nashville. While he spent the majority of his time writing, he continuously tried to live up to his words on paper. “When you’re younger, you feel like you have to do certain things in order to occupy some of these spaces, to make yourself feel like you’re legit. You want to feel things. You want to be able to write about things authentically. If somebody working a different kind of job drank themselves to death in the name of being better at that job, it wouldn’t make sense to anybody. We wouldn’t say, ‘Oh, he must have been the greatest electrician who ever lived.’”

Chris Stapleton Takes A Shot

Now at 45, Chris Stapleton has taken a step back from his partying days. At one time, the singer always took a shot of tequila before a performance. That has changed to doing vocal warmups. “I didn’t have to go to rehab, but from a 45-year-old-man health perspective, a doctor’s gonna look at me and go, ‘Hey, man, probably cut out the drinking.'”

While his career flourishes, when it comes to drinking, he joked, “I like to tell people that I got into a drinking contest with myself in my 20s, and I lost.”
