From her humble beginnings on season one of American Idol, Kelly Clarkson used her moment in the spotlight to launch a career that included, Grammy Awards, coaching on The Voice, and even hosting her own show. With the singer spending the last twenty years in the entertainment industry, it came as somewhat of a surprise when she decided to uproot her family and show in California to move to New York City. And while a cross-country move can be catastrophic, it seems to be working out for Clarkson as she just received the hosting honors for a ceremony dating back to 1933.
Although Kelly Clarkson built what seemed to be the perfect career in California, in May, she announced she was moving her family and show to New York City. But she wasn’t just moving to any normal studio to continue her show. The Kelly Clarkson Show moved to the famous 30 Rockefeller Plaza. Taking over Studio 6A, Clarkson controlled the same space as other iconic host like David Letterman, Conan O’Brien, and Jimmy Fallon.
From L.A. To Rockefeller Center
Discussing her decision to move, Kelly Clarkson explained how she didn’t feel like herself. “I’ll be real honest: I thought I was making a horrible decision. I knew I needed a fresh start and couldn’t be in L.A. I really wanted to be in Montana, but you can’t really do a show from there quite yet. So I was like, ‘The only other option would probably be New York.’” While moving to the city is a drastic shift from California, it seems the singer had only one request. “I was like, ‘I’m not living here unless it’s right by the park and really nice for the kids.’”

While Kelly Clarkson pondered the move, it appears to be working out as she was named the host for the tree lighting ceremony at Rockefeller Center. With the first tree lighting ceremony happening in 1933, the event is a historic part of New York. The Executive Vice President at NBCUniversal Media Group, Jen Neal, said, “The lighting of that magnificent tree at Rockefeller Center is one of the true joys of the holiday season and to have Kelly both host and perform feels like we’re getting our Christmas presents early this year.”
Kelly Clarkson Not Only Hosting
Sharing her excitement about hosting the ceremony, Kelly Clarkson said, “I’m so excited to consider this city and Rockefeller Center my new home, and I can’t imagine a better way to kick off Christmas this year than to be a part of this beautiful New York tradition with the lighting of the tree!”
