Dolly Parton Talks Paying Price For How She Dressed

Dolly Parton

From her signature to her vibrant hairstyle and wardrobe, there is nothing remotely small or quiet about the legendary Dolly Parton. Coming from a family of 11 children, the icon went on to sell more than 100 million records worldwide. More than just one of the best-selling female artists of ALL time, the country singer also helms a theme park, water park, dinner theater, and numerous associations with charities all over the country. Although Dolly seems to hold the world in the palm of her hands, she never forgets where she came from and the price she paid for being her.

Following the release of Run, Rose, Run in 2022, Dolly Parton is yet again on the cusp of another release of her new album Rockstar. For those keeping count, Dolly has released over 60 studio albums during her lucrative career. While attending a recent album promotion in London, the star discussed growing up in Tennessee and how her signature look came with a fair amount of “whippings” from her preacher grandfather.

Drawing Inspiration From An Unlikely Place

But where exactly did Dolly Parton’s look come from? According to her, the town tramp. “She was flamboyant.” The singer added, “She had bright red lipstick, long red fingernails. She had high-heeled shoes, little floating plastic goldfish in the heels of them, short skirts, low-cut tops, and I just thought she was beautiful.”

Wanting to be just like her when she grew up, Dolly Parton recalled how her grandfather believed the Devil possessed her when she bleached her hair.

Given the 1950s Appalachia lifestyle Dolly found herself in, both her father and grandfather disciplined her, but that didn’t stop her. “I was willing to pay for it. I’m very sensitive, I didn’t like being disciplined – it hurt my feelings so bad to be scolded or whipped or whatever. But sometimes there’s just that part of you that’s willing, if you want something bad enough, go for it.”

Dolly’s Strength Comes From Her

Besides receiving a great deal of backlash from her family, Dolly Parton admitted to finding strength in herself. “Everything I do, whether it’s my personality, how I conduct myself and business, or whatever, if I do it my way, according to what I understand and believe, there’s a strength in that.”

With its release on November 17, Dolly Parton shared the inspiration behind Rockstar. Marrying her husband, Carl Thomas Dean on May 30, 1966, the singer said her husband loves rock music. The album comes packed with collaborations like Steve Perry, Sting, Kid Rock, Stevie Nicks, Chris Stapleton, and many more.

Breaking into the industry back in 1956, Dolly Parton’s career spans almost seven decades. With that in mind, which Dolly song is your favorite? Be sure to tell us in the comment section below.
