While most celebrities tend to take on a persona in front of the cameras, hoping to gain more publicity, for Dolly Parton – what you see is what you get. With a career spanning all the way back to the 1950s, the singer behind hits like Jolene understands what it takes to be in the spotlight more than most. And while she has stayed relevant for over 70 years, the singer continues to produce songs, write books, and give back to those who are in need. Credited for being the Queen of Country Music, she discussed her prosperous career and some of the odd makeup techniques she picked up along the way.

Recently, Dolly Parton has been hard at work promoting her new book Behind the Seams: My Life in Rhinestones and her new album Rockstar. Speaking with the media about her new book, the singer recalled growing up in the Great Smoky Mountains and how she didn’t have a great deal of money to afford the cosmetics she wanted. Not letting poverty get her down, she admitted to using household items to create her now iconic look. “I also used household goods to make homemade cosmetics. I’d strike one of Mama’s long wooden kitchen matches, put a little spit on the end of it, and use that to color in my eyebrows and my beauty mark.”
Dolly Parton Always Wants To Look Her Best
Back in the 80s, Dolly Parton found herself living in Los Angeles, California as she tried to break into Hollywood. While Hollywood is known for its stars and beaches, the country singer cared more about mother nature and her looks than red carpets. Knowing that one bad photo could last forever, the star detailed how she would go to bed in full makeup. “When I arrived in LA in the ’80s, I started sleeping with my makeup on, partly because of the earthquakes.” She added, “I thought, ‘I’m not heading out on the streets without makeup in case there are cameras out there! I’m going to be ready to go!'”

Although some might comment on how bad this is for the skin, Dolly Parton insisted that her skin is well-maintained in the mornings. “After I wake up, I do all the little rituals, and then I start over again and go out every day and look good all day long.”
Not Wanting To Look Like A “Hag”
Given that it was the 80s, the trend of sleeping with makeup might sound a little old-fashioned, but Dolly Parton praised her efforts, suggesting she still does it today. Married to her husband, Carl Dean, for over 50 years, she said, “I don’t want to go to bed looking like a hag with Carl.”
