Wynonna Judd Set To Host Holiday Special

Now that Thanksgiving is over, all focus turns to celebrating Christmas. For Wynonna Judd, it will mark the second year she’s spent the holiday without her beloved mother. Naomi Judd passed away in April 2022 after taking her own life.

The mother and daughter had a close relationship, spending years performing together as the country duo The Judds. In 1991, the duo disbanded after Naomi Judd’s health scare. However, Naomi and Wynonna Judd would regularly tour together as The Judds, in addition to Wynonna Judd’s solo career.

Naomi and her daughter were supposed to embark on a tour together in 2022 as The Judds. After her mother’s death, Wynonna Judd honored the outstanding tour dates and performed the duo’s greatest hits with some help from her friends.

Staying busy is one way she copes with the heartbreaking loss. She also returned to her solo career with a short Back To Wy tour that wraps up in early December.

Wynonna Judd also joined Season 24 of The Voice as a mega mentor for Reba McEntire’s team.

Despite her long career in the music industry, Wynonna Judd will host her first Christmas special this year. She will host NBC’s Christmas at the Opry. Performers include Kelly Clarkson, Trace Adkins, This Is Us actress Chrissy Mets, Chris Janson, Mickey Guyton, and the iconic Brenda Lee.

She Aspires To Be Like Brenda Lee

Brenda Lee is 78, but according to Wynonna Judd, she’s as spunky as ever. Judd spoke to Parade magazine ahead of the holiday special. Brenda Lee was one of the most popular singers in the ’60s and ’70s. Her 1958 hit song “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree” is a holiday standard.

While Judd didn’t reveal if that’s what Brenda Lee performs on Christmas at the Opry, she couldn’t stop gushing about the singer. “She’s the kind of personality when she comes into a room, she literally—and I mean literally—lights up a room,” Judd said.

Parade asked if she hopes to be performing at 78 like Brenda Lee, to which Wynonna Judd replied, “God willing, I will.”

“I think about that a lot because I’m turning 60 next year,” she added.

Wynonna Judd will perform a classic Judd song at the special. She re-recorded “Beautiful Star of Bethlehem” and released it as a single this week. “I’m experiencing a lot of memories. It’s like a big scrapbook right now for me,” she said of her decision to record the song solo.

She added that the song is “personal” for her because it was something she sang with her mom before they became The Judds.

“I just feel like it’s a good time to put out something that has good memories for me,” Wynonna Judd, Parade.

Christmas at the Opry airs on Thursday, December 7, at 8 PM Eastern on NBC and streams on Peacock the next day.
