Jason Aldean’s concert on September 9th in Tinley Park, Illinois, was met with protestors as well as fans. Why was the American Flag burned? Keep reading for all the details.
Jason Aldean Forms Close Relationship With Former President Donald Trump
When Jason Aldean began his career in country music in the mid-2000s, musicians and celebrities mainly stayed quiet on the topic of politics. That’s changed in recent years with the rise of social media.
So, when businessman Donald Trump ran for President in 2016, many famous people showed their support. The “Hicktown” singer and Celebrity Apprentice host formed a friendship during and after Trump’s presidency.
In fact, Jason Aldean and his wife, Brittany, rang in New Year’s 2023 with Trump at his Florida Mar-a-Lago estate.
Aldean also posted a photo on his Instagram of golfing with the former President over the holidays.
Trump even came to Jason Aldean’s defense during a recent controversy over his “Try That In A Small Town” song, calling the singer a “fantastic guy,” per Business Insider.
“Try That In A Small Town” Faces Backlash
In May of this year, Jason Aldean released the song “Try That In A Small Town.” The song didn’t garner much attention until two months later when the video came out.
The song’s lyrics warn against committing crimes in a small town. Some of the lyrics include, “Sucker punch somebody on a sidewalk/Carjack an old lady at a red light/Pull a gun on the owner of a liquor store.”
“Try that in a small town/See how far ya make it down the road,” the chorus warns.
There was an uproar over the music video because it used footage of riots across America in the summer of 2020 during Black Lives Matter protests over the death of George Floyd. Several police officers were charged and convicted of causing Floyd’s death by kneeling on his neck.
In addition to the violent clips, the video was filmed in front of the Maury County Courthouse in Columbia, Tennessee, the site of a lynching in 1927.
The controversy actually shot the song to the top spot on Billboard’s music charts, though it was eventually replaced by Oliver Anthony’s anti-establishment anthem. Zach Bryan recently overtook the #1 spot with his song “I Remember Everything,” featuring Kacey Musgraves.
Protestors Burn American Flags Outside Jason Aldean Concert
Jason Aldean is currently touring the country on his Highway Desperado Tour to promote his new album of the same name. On September 9th, the tour took him to Credit Union 1 Amphitheatre in Tinley Park, Illinois.
However, not everyone at the amphitheatre was a fan of Jason Aldean. The Revolution Club Chicago staged a protest that began shortly before the concert.
Windy City Times spoke to Rafael Kadaris, a member of the Revolution Club, about the purpose of the protest. They said the protest was “to call out fascist country singer and wannabe thug Jason Aldean, and his white supremacist lynching song ‘Try That in a Small Town.'”
After the protest, the group Revcoms (Revolutionary Communists) took to social media to taunt Jason Aldean with actions described in the song, “Stomp on the flag and light it up/ Yeah, ya think you’re tough.”
In the clip, a member of The Revolution Club Chicago can be seen lighting the American Flag on fire. “[Jason Aldean] didn’t do sh*t” about burning the flag, the post on Twitter exclaimed.
#JasonAldean said people who burn the American flag should "Try That In A Small Town" & "see how far you make it down the road"
Hey Jason we burned that rag right outside your concert in #TinleyPark & you didn't do shit AND we'll do it again!
REVOLUTION, NOTHING LESS!
