Besides being a country singer, Kelly Clarkson is also a hitmaker. While widely known for winning the first season of American Idol back in 2002, she also holds two Grammy awards for her second studio album, Breakaway. That same album sold over 12 million copies worldwide. Other songs like “My Life Would Suck Without You” hold the record for the quickest leap to number one on the Hot 100.

Other than dominating country music, she also hosts her own daytime talk show and once coached on The Voice. Now, with 20 years in the industry, the star sat down with Jimmy Fallon to discuss her struggles and how it led to eventually changing the lyrics to “Piece by Piece.”

Welcoming Kelly Clarkson to The Tonight Show, Jimmy Fallon and the singer seemed at ease as they causally talked about her Chemistry album, which was released back in June. Congratulating her on the gorgeous look of the album, the pair soon turned to what goes into the writing process of an album. Clarkson surprisingly admitted to having Mariah Carey reach out to her while on The Voice about collaborating on a song.

Kelly Clarkson Turns Down Mariah Carey

When an icon like Mariah Carey reaches out, it seems impossible to decline, but at the time, Kelly Clarkson noted how she typically wrote alone. Although she turned Carey down in the past, it seems that the country singer is more than willing to put her hesitation to the side and see what the duo could create. After sharing her love for Carey, Clarkson told Fallon, “I would love to write. I love you, Mariah Carey, and I will risk it for you. ”

Discussing the writing process, Kelly Clarkson admitted to Jimmy Fallon about the pressure she felt to perform “Piece by Piece” in its original form. With her ongoing struggles, the singer decided to change the verse to fit her just an hour before going on stage in Vegas.

She said, “I rewrote it literally an hour before I went on stage in Vegas to like, sing it because I was like, I can’t sing these lyrics, but I know people want me to sing the song. And so I changed it, right before the show…”

“She Deserves Everything!”

Although changing the lyrics, Kelly Clarkson commanded the stage in Vegas and nailed the song. As for the fans, they showered the singer with praise as one fan wrote, “It makes my heart so happy to see Kelly out here killing the game with her daytime talk show and still releasing music, she deserves everything!” Another person added, “Kelly is so talented but also so so real.”
