Dolly Parton is equally famous for her voice as she is for her bold outfits and big hair. See her feisty response to the fashion police who think she should tone it down.
Dolly Parton Looks Back At Career Through Fashion
At 77 years old, Dolly Parton has her share of personal and professional milestones to look back on. In addition to releasing her first rock album later this year, the country music icon shares another look into her life with fans.
Already a best-selling author, Parton released her latest book on October 17. Behind the Seams: My Life in Rhinestones features photos from Dolly Parton’s early childhood and early career to the present day.
Alongside the images, Parton shares a story or tidbit about that particular photo or time in her life.
Legendary Singer Once Told Her To ‘Tone Down’ Look
Dolly Parton teamed up with Apple Music to promote her new book and upcoming Rockstar album. What Would Dolly Do? is a four-part radio show available on Apple Music and Apple Podcasts.
In the first episode, Dolly Parton shared a story with co-host Kelleigh Bannen about something that happened early in her career. The “9 to 5” singer revealed that a legend in the country music industry wasn’t a fan of her over-the-top outfits or wigs.
According to Dolly Parton, legendary musician Chet Atkins – who was “running RCA at the time” – wanted her to change her look (via Whiskey Riff.)
“He said, ‘Dolly, I really don’t believe that people are going to take you serious as a singer and songwriter unless you tone down your look. You’re a right pretty girl. You don’t need all that.’“ – Dolly Parton on Chet Atkins.
Dolly Parton thanked him for his advice and did the absolute opposite. “I just got worse with it,” she said on the radio show.
I wore this gold-and-silver lamé gown in my “Chicken Ranch” movie, along with these Di Fabrizio gold-and-Lucite mules. Believe it or not, they’re comfortable! For more looks like this, order my new book ‘Behind the Seams: My Life in Rhinestones!’ https://t.co/NcA3zGUokx ✨ pic.twitter.com/SwrdAyU2dp

She ignored the advice at the time, but what would she do if someone tried to get her to tone her look down these days?
Dolly Parton Has Feisty Response To Fashion Critics
After more than 60 years in the music industry, Dolly Parton hasn’t changed her appearance much. Sure, the wigs have gotten smaller as society left big hair in the ’80s, but she still chooses colorful outfits that show off her svelte figure.
While the singer politely reacted to fashion advice from Chet Atkins, she wouldn’t be so polite about it at this stage in her life.
During the same radio show interview, Bannen asked what Dolly Parton would do if someone told her to tone her look down now. The ever-feisty Parton had the perfect retort: “‘Go to h***. I ain’t doing it.’”

She added, “My true belief with most things, you’ve got to really find out who you are, what makes you happy, what you’re comfortable in, and if you feel like you look your best, according to your rules, then you are going to do your best. I really believe that. And I think everybody has their own little things they love. To me, that is what fashion is.” (Per Variety.)
