With a background not in country music, it seemed to surprise the industry when fans not only welcomed Jelly Roll but helped him practically take over the entire genre. No matter the state or venue, the singer continues to sell out arenas and share his passion for music along the way. And to make his rise to fame even better, he always takes time to help those less fortunate and talk about the highs and lows of his own life. As Jelly Roll doesn’t shy away from his vulnerability, he recently surprised the audience at the Grand Ole Opry as they watched Craig Morgan perform.
For fans of Jelly Roll, they know the importance Craig Morgan has on the singer. Throughout the singer’s early life, he struggled with drug addiction, poverty, and eventually found himself behind bars. While the country star had no idea what awaited him, he admitted to listening to Craig Morgan to help him get through those tough times.
“I’m Going To Change My Life”
During his debut at the Grand Ole Opry, Jelly Roll took a moment to recall listening to Almost Home by Craig Morgan. “In that jail cell I found strength in country music. I used to listen to Craig Morgan sing ‘Almost Home’ in my jail cell and think, ‘I’m gonna change my life when I get home.’”
And that is exactly what Jelly Roll did. But before he walked on stage at the Grand Ole Opry, he added, “I came home and Googled ‘Craig Morgan live performance’ and he was right here at the Grand Ole Opry. I sat right there where that man with the ball cap in the seventh row back on this row is sitting. No lie. And I watched Craig Morgan and cried.”

It just so happened that Craig Morgan was working on re-recording some of his greatest hits like Almost Home for his EP Enlisted around the time Jelly Roll discussed the power behind the song. Moved by his words, Morgan explained his emotions about helping people through music. “It brought me to tears, it was that humbling to know that I was a part of something that impacted his life in such a positive way. I immediately called my manager and said, ‘I don’t know him, but get this guy’s number. I want to talk to this guy.” He added, “I want to meet him. I want him to know what that meant to me.’”
Jelly Roll Takes The Stage
Playing a crucial part in Jelly Roll’s acceptance into the Grand Ole Opry, Craig Morgan gifted handwritten lyrics for Almost Home to the singer. But that wasn’t all as the singer recorded Almost Home with Morgan. So it is only fitting that when Morgan celebrated 15 years in the Grand Ole Opry Jelly Roll surprised the audience with a duet of the song.

Happy that Jelly loves it too, Craig is an amazing singer, I love you sir”. “I saw this on the Opry. Probably the most moving, genuine music I’ve heard in a while. Goodness and Grace….Amazing Grace. Thanks for being real.”
