Legendary Country Singer Implores Maren Morris Not to Leave Country Music
In Sept. 2023, Maren Morris made the surprising announcement to step away from country music. The news came after several years of turmoil and disagreements with the actions of her fellow country music artists.
Morris took serious issue with Morgan Wallen’s use of the n-word in 2021. She followed that up a year later with a social media feud over transgender rights with Jason Aldean’s wife, Brittany.
Earlier this year, Maren Morris took on Jason Aldean himself, speaking out against his song “Try That In A Small Town.”
While many country music fans and television hosts cheered her decision to step away from country music, not everyone was on board. A very outspoken and beloved champion of the genre implored the “80s Mercedes” singer not to leave.
Lee Greenwood wrote an open letter for Fox News, criticizing Morris for, in his opinion, attacking the patriotism within country music songs.
“To suggest that country music is ‘too patriotic’ is to not understand country music at all. It’s in our very name: Country music,” Greenwood wrote. “Our music is written for love of our country, our heart for America.”
“Morris would be wiser to stay in country music, where she could continue the conversation and present her interpretation of what it means to be an American today.” – Lee Greenwood to Fox News.
Maren Morris has yet to respond to Lee Greenwood’s open letter, but it seems she’s been too busy dealing with her personal life.
Maren Morris Files for Divorce From Ryan Hurd
On Oct. 17, Us Weekly broke the news that Maren Morris has filed for divorce from Ryan Hurd after five years of marriage. The outlet cites the date of the filing as Oct. 2 and the grounds as “irreconcilable differences.”
Morris, 33, and fellow country singer Hurd, 36, met in 2014 and began dating the following year. Maren Morris and Ryan Hurd were married in 2018. They collaborated on several songs throughout their marriage, including his ballad “Chasing After You” and her single “I Can’t Love You Any More.”
In 2020, the couple welcomed a son, Hayes. While the outlet notes that Morris and Hurd have a prenup, there isn’t any information available yet about a custody agreement.
