The Resurgence of Tanya Tucker

Tanya Tucker had her first hit single at just 13 years old. To this day, “Delta Dawn” is her most famous song. Despite worldwide success after the song’s 1972 release, Tucker struggled to produce chart-topping hits in the late 70s and early 80s, partly  due to her personal life.

She was embroiled in quite the scandalous relationship with Glen Campbell around 1980.

Her first resurgence was in 1988, with eight top-10 hits in a row. Tucker continued her success into the early 90s with songs such as “Two Sparrows and a Hurricane” and “It’s a Little Too Late.”

At the height of her resurgence in the 1990s, she played the Super Bowl XXVIII halftime show with Clint Black, Travis Tritt, and The Judds.

Between 2002 and 2019, Tanya Tucker didn’t release any new music. Singer Brandi Carlile and music producer Shooter Jennings worked with Tucker to write, record, and produce While I’m Livin’ in 2019, her first new material in 17 years.

The journey was filmed for the documentary The Return of Tanya Tucker: Featuring Brandi Carlile, released in 2022 and currently streaming on Netflix.

in 2020, Tanya Tucker won her first two Grammy Awards after almost five decades in the country music industry.

In 2023, she released a new album, Sweet Western Sound, in collaboration with Carlile and Jennings.

The 2023 Country Music Hall of Fame induction took place on Sunday, Oct. 22, in Nashville’s CMA Theater. In addition to Tanya Tucker, Patty Loveless and Bob McDill were inducted into the HOF.

During the induction ceremony, Brandi Carlile performed Tucker’s hit song “Two Sparrows and a Hurricane.” Taste of Country reports that the legendary singer joined Carlile on stage midway through the performance.

The outlet noted Tanya Tucker did the same during Margo Price and Jessie Colter’s performance of “It’s a Little Too Late.

Tanya Tucker acknowledged breaking the rules of decorum in her acceptance speech. She said, “I’ve never been a good audience member.  Tucker added, “And I haven’t been very good today, but it just kind of stuck with me.”

In a nearly 15-minute speech, Tucker thanked Carlile and Jennings, who she said “brought me back from the dead” with her 2019 While I’m Livin’ album.

In her Grammy-winning hit song “Bring Me My Flowers,” Tanya Tucker implores,

“Bring my flowers now, while I’m livin’/I won’t need your love when I’m gone/Don’t spend time, tears, or money on my old breathless body/If your heart is in them flowers, bring ’em on.”
With her induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame, Tanya Tucker is finally getting her flowers.
